Narromine Shire Councillors participated in a road infrastructure tour on Friday, 22 August 2025, to gain detailed insight into the complexities of managing, funding and prioritising the Narromine Shire’s extensive road network.
The tour focused on recent works and current priorities, while also examining the broader economic significance of road infrastructure for the Narromine region.
Led by Narromine Shire Council’s General Manager, Mrs Jane Redden, together with Director Infrastructure and Engineering Services, Ms Melanie Slimming and members of the engineering team, the tour provided Councillors and Senior Staff members with an opportunity to engage directly with technical experts. The team outlined the engineering, logistical and funding challenges associated with maintaining and upgrading 1487 kms of local and regional roads across the Shire.
Mayor Ewen Jones said the initiative was an important step in ensuring Council remains fully informed when making decisions about infrastructure investment.
“Roads are one of the most significant assets under Council’s care, both in terms of their financial value and their critical role in supporting agricultural productivity, business development and community connectivity.
This fact-finding tour provided Councillors with a greater appreciation of the engineering requirements, the long-term funding pressures and the opportunities that an upgraded road network will deliver in positioning the Narromine Region to take advantage of the growth in the agricultural and freight industries along with Inland Rail,” Mayor Jones said.
Council remains committed to ongoing investment in road infrastructure as a foundation for economic growth, improved safety and long-term sustainability.
